Typical Meteorological Year (TMY)

TMY are meteorological hourly data files constructed on the basis of real measured data series.

TMY development follows a sophisticated standardized procedure. It typically consists of a combination of selected months chosen from 10 or more years of real measurements, based on several statistical criteria and representative of average conditions (see TMY generation algorithm).

The boundaries between months are adjusted for smooth transitions, and the data sets include realistic extreme events. They are constructed so the entire year represents typical meteorological conditions for designing energy or architectural systems.

PVsyst now provides a tool to generate TMY based on hourly time series with a minimum of 10 years of meteorological data (see TMY data generation). If you don't have time series of hourly data, the other method used is the synthetic data generation from the meteonorm algorithm based on monthly averages.
